Miles J. Wagner, 95
Of Ballston Spa, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs. Born April 4, 1913 in Ballston Spa, he was the son of the late John and Margaret Wagner. Miles worked as a custodian for many years in the Niskayuna School District. He was a member of the Eagle - Matt Lee Fire Company No. 1, the NRA, as well as a Douser’s Club. Miles loved the outdoors, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his parents, Miles is predeceased by his wife, Dorothea; and all of his siblings. Survivors include his children, Donald Wagner and his wife Susan of Corinth and Judy Randall and her husband Leslie of Ballston Spa; 8 grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Cole, Randy, Scott, Colleen, Tracey, Lee “Butch“; along with several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. Burial will follow in the Greenridge Cemetery, Saratoga Springs. A Calling hour will precede the service from 10 to 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle - Matt Lee Fire Company No. 1, P.O. Box 4, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

Carl C. Schmidt Sr
Of Route 9, Malta, went to be with his late wife Elinor, on Saturday, July 19 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Galway, February 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Carl and Eva Schmidt. He served in the US Navy. Carl was a master craftsman and member of the Carpenters Union. He later worked for the NYS Department of Labor and was superintendent of buildings and grounds for Saratoga County, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Malta Ridge United Methodist Church and Clifton Park Elks. Carl enjoyed reminiscing and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife Elinor Schmidt and two brothers Oscar and Donald Schmidt. He is survived by his children Candace Schmidt of Malta; Carl C. (Denise) Schmidt Jr of New Lebanon and Pamela (Andy) Gary of Ballston Spa; 4 granddaughters Patricia Brennan of West Palm Beach, FL, Jennifer West of Ballston Spa, Nicole Schmidt of New Lebanon and Kari Schmidt of New Lebanon, sister Helen (Ken) Robinson of Mayfield, brother Robert (Pat) Schmidt of Ledyard, CT, sister in law Ruth Schmidt of Rye, NH and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 1pm Wednesday, July 23, at Ballston Spa Cemetery, Garrett Road, Ballston Spa. James F. Parillo Sr
Of Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday, July 19 at Wesley Health Care Center. Born in Ballston Spa, June 21, 1916, he was the son of the late Frank and Fannie Parillo. Jim was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He worked for REA Express of South Glens Falls for over 30 years and was also a dispatcher for the Lake George Police Dept for 20 years, retiring in 1972. He assisted in the operation of Scotty’s Restaurant in Wilton for many years. Jim was a 50 year member of Eagle Matt Lee Fire Co No 1 in Ballston Spa. He was a high school basketball referee and member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials. He was also involved in the equestrian circuit and participated as a steward in many horse shows.


He was predeceased be his wife Helen E. Marra Parillo; brother Tony Parillo and 4 sisters Rosalie Parillo, Carmel Parillo, Mary Frandino and Frances Davis. He is survived by his children Frank Parillo and his wife Delores of Malta, James Parillo Jr and his wife Catherine of Saratoga Springs and Karen Parillo of Ballston Spa; 5 grandchildren Tina Nigro, Scott Parillo, James Parillo III, Michael Parillo and Christopher Kowalski; 4 great grandchildren Scott Parillo, Jr, Kyran Nigro, Dawson Nigro and Leah Nigro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 9:30am Tuesday, July 22 at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, where a mass of christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery, Ballston Spa. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday evening from 4-8pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. Joseph W. Brower
Of Loughberry Mobile Home Park, passed away Sunday, July 13 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Ballston Spa, May 13, 1934, he was the son of the late William and Agnes Brower. Joe served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a tech sergeant, in 1971. He then worked in the food service industry. He established the catering service at the former Rafters Restaurant on Saratoga Lake and managed one of the food service departments at Skidmore College and the Edison Club. He later worked for Saratoga Springs Water Department and Saratoga Springs Schools. In his younger years, Joe was a pilot and enjoyed flying, riding his motorcycle and boating. His favorite hobby has always been cooking. After his retirement, he was a volunteer for meals on wheels.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Beatrice LaPier Brower; 3 children Kevin Brower and his wife Kathy of Saratoga Springs, Kelly Brower and his wife Susan of Ithaca and Kathleen Mecier and her husband Bruce of Saratoga Springs; 6 grandchildren Stephen Currier Jr, Tina Currier, Eric Currier, Christopher Brower, Luke Brower and Spencer Brower; 4 great grandchildren Cierra Currier, Joshua Grimley Jr, Stephen Currier, III and Chloe Currier; brother Gary Brower of Stafford, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service with full military honors will be held 3pm Wednesday, July 16 at Gerald B H Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Town of Saratoga. Florence E. Conner
Died Thursday, July 10, 2008, in the Saratoga Care Nursing Home at Saratoga Hospital. She was born in May 1915, in County Offaly, Ireland, where her father, Alfred Fletcher, was a farmer. Her mother was Bessie Hayes Fletcher. She grew up on the farm, moving as a young woman to England, where she worked in child care. She lived in London toward the end of World War II, when it was under attack from V1 and V2 flying bombs and rockets.

She was employed in the early 1950s by Robert C. Conner, who worked for Pan American World Airways at Heathrow Airport near London, and married him a decade later. They lived in Woking, Surrey, England, moving to Amityville, Long Island, in the late 1970s when he worked for Pan Am at New York’s Kennedy Airport. They moved to Bradenton, Fla., in the early 1980s and to Saratoga County in the late 1990s. He died in 2005.

Throughout her life, Florence’s rapport with children resulted in lasting friendships. She also remained close to her Irish family. She was an excellent cook, an accomplished knitter, and had a green thumb. A loving, gracious, and hard-working home-maker, Florence was also an intrepid sailor and traveler.

In late 2005 she moved into the nursing home, where her positive spirit endured. Her family is grateful for the loving care she received there from staffers including Rachel, Christine, Kweilyn, MaryAnn, Sean, Sue, and others.

Survivors include stepchildren Christina Arber, of Shipley, Yorkshire, England, and Robert C. Conner Jr. and wife Barbara of Malta, NY; step grandchildren Mary, Michael, Kathleen, Patrick, John, Molly and Thomas; step great-grandchildren Samuel, Jude, William, Florence and Marjorie; and several nieces, nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 9am Friday, July 18 at Ballston Spa Presbyterian Church, 22 West High St., with the Rev. David Bennett, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at 11 am at Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Town of Saratoga. There are no calling hours, but there will be a luncheon after the ceremonies at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Conner Jr. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to either the Ballston Spa Presbyterian Church, or to a charity benefiting children such as Boys Hope Girls Hope or CARE for the Child.

John Kenneth McClennan
Formerly a resident of Ballston Spa, passed away Wednesday, July 9, at the Cape Cod Hospital in Massachusetts. He was a resident of Yarmouth Port. Mr. McClennan was born in Schenectady, June 28, 1914, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Mildred Arnold McClennan. He graduated from Ballston Spa High, Class of 1932 and Hamilton College. He earned a PhD from Cornell University. Most of his professional life was spent overseas, India, Nigeria, Monrovia and Sudan, in the employ of Exxon.

He was married to the late Virginia Smith. He is survived by his brother William A. McClennan of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts and two nieces Doreen Gardner of California and Christine Mc Clennan of Vermont. Burial will be in the family plot in Ballston Spa Cemetery.

Brian A. Edwards
Of Stoney Point Road, Malta, passed away Tuesday, July 1, at St Peter’s Hospital. Born in Chippenham, England, January 13, 1938, he was the son of the late William J. and Margaret Berry Edwards. He attended schools in England, Canada and graduated in Cohoes. He was an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force from 1957-1961. Brian was a home building contractor, working with his sons at TMB Builders

Brian was a self taught tradesman who loved teaching the trade of carpentry, the arts, and literature with a twist of creativity. He was an artist who worked in all mediums, including oils, ink, pencil, charcoal and water colors. A creative writer, he wrote essays, short stories, poems and reflective memorials for loved ones. He never told others how to live, he just lived his life and let others watch. A longtime resident of Saratoga Lake, he enjoyed all of its activities and beauty. A man who had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest, he was a loving, proud, husband, father, grandfather and pet lover.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Deanna B. Edwards; 3 children Karen and SGM Mark H. Oldroyd of Castorland, Marcus W. Edwards of Malta and Trevor D. Edwards and Melanie Milley of Malta; 2 grandchildren Tessa Lynn Oldroyd and Taylor Lee Oldroyd; brother Michael and Mary Edwards of Round Lake; 2 sisters Jennifer Borowski of Round Lake and Gillian and Joseph Rigney of Round Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday, July 10, at the former DiDonna’s Restaurant, Route 9P and Plains Road, Malta from 5:30-9:30pm. Carl J. Vedder
Passed away, Monday, July 1 at Saratoga Hospital. A kind, gentle man has quietly left us. Born at home, on East Line Road in Ballston Spa, December 17, 1933, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth Vedder. He attended Ballston Spa Schools and served in the US Army in France and Germany. Many years ago, Carl worked as a mechanic at Cunningham Garage, Carl King Ford and later as a heavy equipment mechanic for the Village of Ballston Spa, retiring in 1996.

Carl enjoyed the privilege of having many long lasting friendships. Nothing was more important to Carl than friends and family, especially 2 little girls, 4 year old Balbina and 3 year old Ada, his granddaughters, his legacy. Carl also enjoyed old cowboy movies, stock car racing, Lincoln Pond, fishing and restoring his 1938 Chevy Coupe.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Marilyn and Beatrice, brother Arthur, father in law and mother in law William and Rose Kelley, Sr and best friend in life Francis Prunier. Carl is survived by his wife of 43 years Terrence Kelley Vedder; daughter and son in law Kelley and Terry Bouchard of Charlton; 2 granddaughters Balbina and Ada; sister Margaret Regis of Virginia; 3 brothers Edward (Sandra) Vedder of Ballston Spa, Howard (Lillian) Vedder of Ballston Spa and Donald (Sally) Vedder of Jonesville and Florida; sister in law Sylvia Vedder of Ballston Spa; brother in law and sister in law Dr William and Ann Kelley, Jr of Ballston Spa; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lucille Stacey
Passed away, Monday, June 30, at her daughter’s home, in Rock City Falls, where she resided for the past eight years. Born in Harrisonburg, VA, August 9, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Bessie Perkey Clem. Lucille was predeceased by her first husband John M. Harris; second husband James Stacey; daughter MaryAnn McClanahan; son John M. Harris, Jr; 2 sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by her daughter Roselee Boice and her husband Richard of Rock City Falls; sister Easter Hopkins of Georgia; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

Claudia J. Kubina
Of Kent Street, Ballston Spa, passed away Sunday, June , 29, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Ballston Spa, March 7, 1954, she was the daughter of Marilyn Arnold and the late Claude Arnold. Claudia was a paraprofessional for King Magnet School. This past year, she has been taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her niece Julie Elwell and father in law George E. Lewis. She is survived by her husband Mark Lewis, Sr; 3 children Mark (Elizabeth) Lewis, Jr of Ballston Spa, Lori (Jermisel) Lewis Harris of Rock Hill, SC and Maria Lewis of Ballston Spa; mother Marilyn Arnold of Ballston Spa, sister Carol (Albert) Elwell of Rock City Falls; brother Chuck (Lesley) Arnold of Buskirk; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Of Ballston Spa, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008. Born in Silesia, Germany, October 23, 1917 she was the daughter of the late Reinhold and Amelia (Spitzer) Reichel. She was married to George F. Halfar on May 30, 1941, until his death in 1993.

She was predeceased by 2 daughters, 1 son, 1 great grandchild, 3 brothers and 1 sister. Sabine is survived by her loving family, including her daughter Baerbel and her husband Bernd Ettrich of Malta; grandson Brian (Kerry) Ettrich of Hawaii and Kevin (Jennifer) Ettrich of Malta; granddaughters Trixy (Larry) Sullivan of Ridgeway, SC, Cathryn Stephenson of Sommerville, SC and Nicole (Kenneth) Fielder of Plant City, FL; great granddaughters Emily and Anna Ettrich and Shaina Simms; and devoted friend Erwin Bretzel of Athol, NY.

Formerly of Saratoga Springs, passed away Tuesday, June 24 at Schuyler Ridge in Clifton Park. Born in Ballston Spa, December 30, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Helen Knapp. Patricia worked at UMI in Malta. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa and enjoyed spending time at home with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Bruce O. Wilson and 2 brothers Richard and Donald Knapp. She is survived by her children Maureen (Daniel) Harvey of Arlington, VT, Michael (Sharon) Wilson of Greenfield Center and Charles (Maeann) Wilson of Saratoga Springs; sister Jean (Leonard) Uline of West Nyack; sister in law Joan Knapp of Florida; 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Alice M. McGowan
Formerly of Charlton, passed away Wednesday, June 18, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Schenectady, September 2, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Matilda Pratt. Alice was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Harry McGowan; daughter Joan Szerszanowicz; brothers Albert and Loren Pratt and sisters Irene Crounse and Doris Spencer. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Seelow of Broadalbin, 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren.

John E. Raymond
Mr. John Edgar Raymond formerly of Ballston Spa and Brant Lake, NY, peacefully passed into the loving arms of God on Monday, June 16, 2008 at his lake residence in Brant Lake surrounded by his family. Born October 5, 1915, he was the son of the late George D. and Edith C. (Lyons) Raymond.

With his beloved wife, Sarah A. (Settle) Raymond, Mr. Raymond owned and operated their seasonal business, the Palisades Hotel resort on Brant Lake, which is now Raymond’s Sand Beach Mountain Cottages. Off season, he managed The Mayfair Manor in Delray Beach, FL and Seacrest by the Sea also in Delray. A retired Realtor, Mr. Raymond, who attended Cornell University, was with Elmstrom and Cline Realtors. He was previously with Carl King Ford. Other employment included construction on the West Milton Ball and tin-smiting on several sites in New York City.

In earlier years, he was an active member and contributor to the Ballston Spa Presbyterian Church, Boy Scouts of America, Lion’s Club, the Franklin Lodge Masonic Temple, President of the Ballston Spa Chamber of Commerce and the Brant Lake Association, as a founding member. Mr. Raymond also started a USO chapter in Ballston Spa.

A devoted husband for 67 years, Mr. Raymond was predeceased by his wife Sarah A. (Settle) Raymond and their son John S. Raymond. He is survived by his children, Mr. Michael L. and Sandra (Blinn) Raymond of Brant Lake, Sally (Raymond) and Jeff Clark of Ballston Spa; grandchildren Michael J. and Blair (Haley) Raymond of Niskayuna, Brion S. and Melissa (Bennis) Raymond of San Francisco, CA, Jennifer S. (Clark) and Kabir Shah of Brooklyn and Jacquelyn A. Clark of Philadelphia. He was known as “GG Pa” to his 5 great grandchildren, who he was able to hear playing on his beach at the lake just prior to his death.

Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Ballston Spa Presbyterian Church, West High Street, Ballston Spa, followed by interment at the Ballston Spa Cemetery. Nickolas James Kinney
Of Ballston Spa, passed away Sunday, June 15, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Saratoga Springs, January 7, 1994, he was the son of Paul J. Kinney and Kimberly M. Clark. Nickolas was an 8th grade student at Ballston Spa Middle School.

Nickolas had an avid love for music which he expressed not only through his songwriting, but also with his artistic ability. Nickolas thrived on playing his guitar and performing for his family and friends. He was in the process of forming a band with one of his best friends. He enjoyed fishing with his dad and hanging out with his many friends.

He was predeceased by his great great grandmother Gertrude Graves; grandfather Buddy D. Clark and uncle Gerald M. Monroe. Nickolas is survived by his mother Kimberly M. Clark of Ballston Spa; father and stepmother Paul J. Kinney and Stacey Anders of Galway; brothers Logan A. and Kyle M. Coon of Ballston Spa; stepbrothers Brannon and Quintin Anders of Galway; grandmothers Beverly Clark of Ballston Spa; Faye Gill of Malta and Patti Preston of Malta; grandfathers Nick Seymour of Malta and William Kinney of Ballston Spa; great grandmothers Ellen Bunyan of Saratoga Springs and Shirley Graves of Lansing; aunts and uncles Kelly Jo Monroe of Wilton; Timothy and Melinda Kinney of Broadalbin, William Kinney, Jr of Galway and Hannah Kinney of Ballston Spa; cousins Sierra, Christopher, Dylan, Cody, Patrick and Joshua and many great aunts, great uncles and close friends.

Barbara G. Capasso
Of Antioch Road, Middle Grove, passed away Saturday, June 14 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Bay Ridge, NY, December 10, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Edna Hemion. Barb worked for Ballston Spa National Bank for 14 years, until her retirement. She was a member of American Legion Post 234 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a cancer survivor. She enjoyed camping, going out for dinner and her beloved dogs, Gizmo and Pebbles.

She is survived by her husband Michael Capasso; 3 sons Christopher (Joan) Minett of Ballston Spa, Jerry (Amy) Minett of Hedgesville, WV, and Michael A. Capasso of Great Mills, MD; 4 grandchildren Heather, Krystina, Logan and Lauren; brother Howard (Evelyn) Clark of Poughkeepsie; 2 sisters Lee Neal of Caroga Lake and Linda (Smitty) Smith of Florida; mother in law Marion Capasso of Ballston Spa, aunt Mary Divens of Ballston Spa; cousin Greg Divens of Ballston Spa; best friends Mel Spiak and Carol Higgins; sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces and nephews.

Of Red Oak Lane, Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday, June 14, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Albany, December 3, 1943, he was the son of the late George and Georgette Briggs. He was an Air Force veteran, serving during Vietnam. George worked for Niagara Mohawk for 30 years, retiring in 1995. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Ruth was a waitress at the former Sugar Shack in Ballston Spa. She also worked with mentally handicapped children for 25 years. She was Elvis Presley’s number one fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Of Paisley Road, Ballston Spa, passed away Sunday, June 8 at Northwoods in Niskayuna. Born in Glenville, March 3, 1919, he was the son of the late John and Ella Hummer. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Jim worked for General Electric Co in Schenectady for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of American Legion Post 1092 of Niskayuna, VFW Post 1895 of Schenectady and the Moose Legion.

Of Saratoga Springs, passed away Wednesday, June 4, after an automobile accident. Born in Spokane, Washington, April 22, 1991, he was the beloved son of Robert and Diane Loomis. Eddie was a junior at Saratoga Springs High School. He was a member of the football and baseball team. He also enjoyed basketball, karate and weight lifting. Eddie was kindhearted and had a great sense of humor. He was a gentleman and loved his girlfriend, Meghan Lewis.

Of Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday May 31, 2008 at Whittier Nursing Home. Born August 31, 1923 in Saratoga, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes DeLafayette. Dorothy was a graduate of Albany College of Pharmacy. She was a medical technologist for Saratoga Medical Associates for 25 years. Dorothy was a member of the American Legion Post 234 Ladies Auxiliary in Ballston Spa for 65 years. She was also a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Ballston Spa. Dorothy enjoyed needle work and crocheting, and loved her coffee milkshakes, but most of all her greatest joy was hosting many holiday gatherings with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Fred and her brother Joseph Donald DeLafayette. Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Jenks of Hague and Lynne Jenks and her husband Larry Spencer of Susquehanna, PA; cousin John Murray and his fiancée Cathy Holland of Saratoga Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret W. Irwin
Formerly of Saratoga Avenue, Ballston Spa, passed away Thursday, May 29 at Maplewood Manor. Born in Charlton, January 17,1913, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Clara Welch. Margaret was a graduate of Ballston Spa High School, Hudson Falls Teachers Training Class and Oneonta Teachers College. She taught two years at Harmony Corners one room school and two years in District 8 Milton, when it was centralized with Galway. She was a teacher at Galway Central Schools for 25 years.

Margaret was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ballston Spa where she served as a deacon, elder, church school teacher and on the board of Little Angels Nursery School. She was a member of Malta Ridge Grange for 61 years and was matron of juvenile grange for several years. She won first prize at the NYS Fair for greatest improvement of the grange for the year. She was a member of West Milton Grange and board member and secretary of Malta Ridge Cemetery Association. She was a member of Ballston Area Seniors, where she served as publicity director, on the board, chair of knit and crochet booth at the bazaar and senior chorus. She was a member of Ballston Spa Retired Teachers Association, Galway PTA, NYS Teachers Association, Friends of Library, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Eastern Star. She was a member and volunteer at the Brookside Museum and was instrumental in organizing the museum, with her husband and other members. She was a league bowler with Galway Women and Ballston Seniors until age 83. She was a member of Calorie Counters, serving as treasurer, a member and officer in Girl Scouts and worked as an election inspector for the republican party. She was interested in family history and researched the Welch Family.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband Thomas H. Irwin, son Thomas E. Irwin, 2 sisters Hazel Conde and Gertrude Grupe and 2 brothers Douglas and Wesley Welch. Of Maple Avenue, Ballston Spa, passed away Thursday, May 22 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in the Town of Milton, November 24, 1935, he was the son of the late Frank and Lura Baird. Former longtime resident of Ballston Lake, passed away Sunday, May 18, at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home. Born in Brooklyn, December 7, 1912, he was the son of the late George G. Hopkins, Jr and Lisa Bloodgood Hopkins. They moved to “The Daisy Farm” in Ballston Lake, where he graduated from Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School. He received his bio-chemical degree at Harvard University and masters degree in Forestry from Yale University. George worked in New Hampshire, California and New Jersey before returning to the family farm in Ballston Lake, to work at the GE Silicone Plant in Waterford. He was a longtime member of Ballston Center Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He also taught Sunday school.

George was predeceased by his brothers William and John Hopkins and sisters Alice Eyreman and Virginia Mayakis. George is survived by his beloved wife, Vernice Orlop Hopkins, they would have celebrated their 70th anniversary in June, son Richard (Dorothy) Hopkins of Charlton; twin daughters Susan (Frederick) Malone of Guilderland and Sandra (John) Knabner of Ballston Lake; 8 grandchildren David (Katherine) Hopkins, Steven Hopkins, Debra (James) Baum, Richard (Sondra) Erickson, Glen (Vicki) Batzinger, Amy Adams, Lori (Peter) Friguletto, Sean (Missy) Knabner; 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her father and grandfather Frederick Bischoff opened the Bischoff Chocolate Factory in Ballston Spa. She lived in Ballston Spa for most of her life, except for three years, when her husband was in the service in Florida. She married Harold Wetsel on February 13, 1943. After the war, they lived in Oneonta for 2 years, and they came back to Ballston and opened the Ballston Hardware Store on Lincoln Corners. Since 1975, they spent winters in Melbourne, FL and summers in Ballston Spa. Harold died in 1985, and on August 1, 2005, she moved to Preswick Chase in Saratoga Springs.

Emily was a telephone operator in Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa. She also worked at Knolls Atomic Energy in West Milton. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ballston Spa and until a few years ago she was a very active member. She served as chairman of the Official Board, president of the Women’s Society and a member of the Cheerful Circle. She was also an active member of the Ballston Spa Country Club where she and her husband played golf for many years. She was a member of Franklin Star OES and a Past Matron and a member of the Past Matrons Club. She was an active member of the Ballston Area Seniors and the Ballston Spa House and Garden Club.

She was predeceased by her husband Harold Wetsel and brother Alfred Bischoff. She is survived by her sons Gary (Leslie) Wetsel of Capitola, CA and Maui, HI and David Wetsel of Gansevoort; 4 grandchildren Teri Lin Newton of Danville, CA Scott Wetsel of Maui, HI, Kimberly Ashline of Rouse Point, NY and Kristen Wetsel of Saratoga Springs, 3 great grandchildren Kiana, Cassidy and Cayden Newton and step great grandson Kohei Wetsel; nephew Alfred (Diane) Bischoff, Jr and his two children Dawne and Mark of Florida and former daughter in law Carole Wetsel of Arizona.

Formerly of Maple Avenue, Ballston Spa, passed away Tuesday, May 6, at Saratoga Hospital after a short illness. Born in Ballston Spa, May 4, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Elsie Morris. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Ballston Spa. On January 16, 1943, she married Rudson L. Shrome. Family was the sole focus of Elva’s life. Our hearts will forever be filled with times of love and special memories of a life partner, mother, grandmother and special friend, who cared and loved to the utmost, all through her life.

She was predeceased by her husband Rudson, brother Alfred Morris and grandson Bryan Shrome. Robert A. Cromie
Of the Town of Charlton, passed away Monday, May 5, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Schenectady, July 25, 1940, he was the son of Tarsilla and the late Robert S. Cromie. He was a graduate of Ballston Spa High School and SUNY Cobleskill. He served in the Army National Guard Company A of Saratoga Springs. He was currently serving as assessor for the Town of Charlton. Throughout his life Bob operated Dungiven Farm, first as a dairy, then as a beef/hay operation. Later he also worked 20 years for General Electric Co Gas Turbine in Schenectady. After the large lay off at GE, he established Bob Cromie Renovation & Restoration. He was a civil war buff and enjoyed history and writing. Bob was proud to have his work published in “Saratoga County Heritage.”

He was a life member of Harmony Corners Fire Dept, where he served in multiple line officer positions, chief, president, and fire commissioner. He also served on the Saratoga County Fire Advisory Board and the Harmony Corners Fire Dept Building Committee. He was an active participate of the Saratoga Friends meeting.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Lee Whitford Cromie; 3 children Sandra (Wesley) Burch of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Bonny Rob (Don) Henderson of Geneseo and Christian “Kit” (Kathy) Cromie of Mayfield; 4 grandchildren Elijah and Sheena Burch, Hanna and Emily Cromie; mother Tarsilla Cromie of Ballston Spa; 2 brothers James P. Of Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, passed away Wednesday, April 30 at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ballston Spa, March 4, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Beatrice Little. He was a graduate of Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School and served in the US Army. Dan worked at his family’s market, Little’s Country Market in Ballston Spa for several years. In 1982 he opened Just Meat’s in Malta, which he owned and operated with his children.

He was a supporting, loving, father, grandfather and friend. He had many passions, horses, gardening and working in the yard. He most loved reading history and long rides. He loved discovering and appreciating the countryside. Our father would like to thank the surrounding communities for the wonderful support, love and friendships given to him over the years.

He was predeceased by his 3 brothers John, Quentin and Milton Little. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra Cramer Little; 6 children Holly Little-Nelson and her companion Dan Cellucci of Grafton, MA; John F. (Theresa) Little of Rock City Falls; Daniel P. Joseph "Jay" E . Reed
Of Axe Street, Ballston Spa, passed away Sunday, April 27, at Albany Medical Center. Born in Mount Hope, West Virginia, he was the son of Elizabeth Reed and the late James Reed, he spent his youth in North Miami, Florida. He served in the US Navy on the Presidential Command Ship. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, in Earth Science, from Northern Arizona University. Jay worked as a carpenter and became a skilled woodworker, but he was a rockhound at heart. He was a cub scout leader for Pack 2 in Ballston Spa and loved teaching geology at Camp Saratoga. He enjoyed camping, fishing, auctions and bird watching. His favorite hobby was digging in the dirt for rocks and minerals. Jay was a big fan of rock and roll, especially the Stones, ZZ Top and Tom Petty. He loved a good time with family and friends, a good poker game, a day at the races and a night at SPAC.

Jay was a hero to many for having a liver transplant 14 years ago and a kidney transplant 3 years ago. He was always grateful for those gifts of life. A great father, friend, and mentor he will be missed by all and never forgotten.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years Christine Reed; twin sons Eric and Trevor Reed of Ballston Spa; son Breton Reed of Ballston Spa; mother Elizabeth Reed of Coconut Creek, Florida; sister Mimi Reed of Coconut Creek, Florida; brother Ken Reed of Mooresville, Indiana; a niece and several nephews.

Formerly of South Street, Ballston Spa, passed away Sunday, April 13,at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Galway, March 23, 1924, he was the son of the late George and Bertha Hill. William T. Mould
Of Ballston Spa, passed on Sunday, April 6, at Maplewood Manor. Born in Schenectady, February 17, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles and Martha Lasher Mould. He grew up in Ballston Spa with his family being the center of his life. He left high school to support his family, delivering ice from a horse drawn wagon, during the depression. Prior to enlisting in the US Army, he was an electrician helper. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and served in HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry as a Field Wire Chief. He was awarded a purple heart and a good conduct medal. Bill was a carpenter and worked for Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna for 25 years. He liked to work with his hands and was always renovating his home, which was originally built by his father.


He was predeceased by his brother and sister in law Conrad and Dorothy Mould and sister Shirley Brown. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Houghton Mould; 3 children Alan (Marilyn) Mould of Scotia, William (Joanne) Mould of Ballston Spa and Jacqueline (Robert) Endres of Watervliet, 6 grandchildren William Mould, Jr of Raleigh, NC, Alan (Carole) Mould Jr of Scotia, Nicole (Michael) Nadeau of Ballston Spa, Amy (Garry) Apple of Marysville, CA, Ashley Mould of Scotia and Matthew Endres of Watervliet; 3 great grandchildren Nicholas, Amaya and Bryan Nadeau of Ballston Spa, brother in law Scott Brown of Ballston Spa and several loving nieces and nephews.

Of Northline Road, Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday, April 5, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Schenectady, July 22, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Hilda Renaud. Mary was an operating room technician at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady for 18 years. She was an active resident of Milton Village Apartments. She was known as grandma by the children and parents of Kids Club, her daughter’s child care center in Ballston Spa. She often brought the children cookies and candy. She lived her life to the fullest and celebrated every day with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her children and never missed a family event. Mary was a beautiful lady, who was always fashionable and classy.

She was predeceased by her husband Boguslaw Chojecki and her daughter Judith Ann Girvin. She is survived by her children John Michael Chojecki and his wife Patricia M. of Ballston Spa and Karen Stowell and her companion Pete Vincelette of Ballston Spa; 11 grandchildren Joey, Michelle, David, Pam, Lisa, Karan, Kevin, Kimberly, Leo, Dana and Heather, 14 great grandchildren, brother Kenneth Renaud of Montana and several nieces and nephews.

James L. Bridger
Of Ballston Spa, passed away Saturday, March 22, at Maplewood Manor. Born in Cherry Valley, NY, he was the son of the late Leonard W. and Martha E. Wikoff Bridger. As was common at the time, Jim quit high school to join the Army with his parent’s blessing. He served in Italy and North Africa and celebrated his 19th birthday, D-Day June 6, 1944, in a foxhole on Anzio Beach. He worked for General Electric Co in Schenectady for many years. Jim was a kind and generous man with a soft spot for children and animals. He was an avid hunter and had a great love for the outdoors.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Albert “Bud” Bridger. He is survived by his daughters Karen L. (Robert G.) Dutcher of Ballston Spa and Sharon A. (Edwin K.) Of Leahy Lane, Ballston Spa, passed away Wednesday, March 19, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Ballston Spa, September 24, 1924, he was the son of the late William and Lena Arnold. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Stan worked for General Electric Co in Schenectady for 37 years, retiring in 1983. He was a past member of Union Fire Co No 2, Franklin Masonic Lodge F&AM, Oriental Shrine and GE Quarter Century Club. He was a member of Ballston Area Seniors and their chorus. He was an avid supporter of Ballston Spa High School athletics. He served on the Ballston Spa School Board for 12 years.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Arnold and 3 brothers Robert, Charles and Claude Arnold. He is survived by his children William (Cynthia) Arnold of Rock City Falls, Sylvia (Wayne) Bertrand of Ballston Spa and James (Elaine) Arnold of Galway; 5 grandchildren Patrick (Kimberly) Arnold, Michelle (Scott) French, Sara Curcio and her fiancé Matthew Scoles, Dana Bertrand and Alicia (Steve) Stanley; 2 great grandchildren Patrick and Hannah; 2 sisters Ida Nichols of Keeseville, Ruth Sawyer of Whitingham, VT and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond "Pick" Plummer
Of Galway, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Milton on June 1, 1918, he was the son of the late Clyde and Bertha Plummer. Raymond worked for Roy Garrison as a dairy farmer for many years. He had a great passion for hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Sammie Plummer; sister, Wilda Harris; and 4 brothers, Claude, Albert, Irving and Earl (Pete) Plummer. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Granger of Orlando, FL, Charlotte Stockwell of Apopka, FL, and Minnie Simmons of Schaghticoke; and several nieces and nephews.

Passed away, Thursday, March 13, at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. Born in Albany, January 1, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Victoria Ciejka. She grew up in Troy and later moved to Ballston Spa. Jane worked for Espey Manufacturing in Saratoga Springs for 25 years. She was an animal lover. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Carl Barney and 2 sisters Mary Rosekrans and Stella Stasack. She is survived by 2 daughters Virginia (Peter) Hernick of Albany and Elizabeth (Arthur) Pacelli of Saratoga Springs; son Robert (Jean) Barney of Stillwater; grandchildren Ashley and Danielle Pacelli of Saratoga Springs, Erich Barney of Saratoga Springs and Kurt Barney of Bayonne, NJ; 3 sisters Josephine (Rocky) Stasack of Troy; Lilly (Benny) Huskie of Troy and Bertha Sheehan of Troy; and several nieces and nephews.

Louis Gnip
Of Brownell Road, Malta, passed away Sunday, March 9 at Saratoga Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Vinne, Czechoslovakia, November 13, 1910, he was the youngest of 13 children. He married Mary Michajlo in 1936 and came to the United States in 1937, settling in Brooklyn, NY. Lou worked at the Silvercup Bakery and Bischoff’s in Brooklyn. In 1944, he purchased a dairy farm in Saratoga County, Town of Malta. In April of 1945 he moved to the farm with his wife, daughter Mary and infant son Louis Jr. The train that he rode on that day was the same train that carried Franklin D. Roosevelt’s casket. FDR died in Warm Springs, GA, April 12, 1945. His casket was transported by rail, to upstate NY for burial at the Roosevelt Estate in Hyde Park, NY. Lou's second son Michael Eddy was later born in 1954.

In addition to operating the dairy farm in Malta, Lou worked for the Army Depot in Schenectady, Martinec Meat Packing in Scotia, Ballston Spa Tannery and in 1957, he began working for the NYS Department of Conservation at the Saratoga Spa State Park, retiring in 1978.

Lou loved to hunt and occasionally fish at Saratoga Lake. He was a past member of the Malta Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Some of his hunting stories have been published in the recent publication “Malta Memories” that reflects on the history of Malta. These stories were written by one of his close friends, Oswald Blow. Lou loved to socialize and tell stories to his friends. He often gave out single 2 dollar bills to friends, family and strangers as a token of good luck. He always professed that it is better to give than to receive.

Lou will always be remembered for his philosophy of life and social interaction with friends and relatives. He has left behind a legacy for all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary Gnip and a granddaughter Tonya. He is survived by his three children Mary (John) Polzin of Voorheesville, Louis J. (Rosemary) Gnip of Ballston Spa and Michael E. (Donna) Gnip of Ballston Lake; 6 grandchildren Bonnie, Holly, Devon, Winter, Ashley and Renee; 3 great grandchildren Kyle, Jocelyn and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 9am Friday, March 14, at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, where a mass of christian burial will be celebrated. Of Canty Road, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Saratoga Hospital. Born April 13, 1918 in Milton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lura Baird. Leona was an inspector and packer for General Foods for 20 years. She enjoyed scrap booking and square dancing, but her greatest joy was spending time with and caring for her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Leonard J. Winford; daughter Patricia Winford; great granddaughter Jessie Spofford; 3 brothers, William, Glen and Howard Baird; and sister Mary Baker. Survivors include her son, Robert J. Winford, Sr. of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren Robert J. Winford, Jr. and his wife Mary of Wilton, Scott W. Winford of Middle Grove, and Sherry L. Winford and her husband Darren Erb of Victor, NY; great granddaughter, Alysha M. Winford; brother Lester Baird of Ballston Spa; sister, Bessie Thibideau of Middle Grove, and several nieces and nephews.

Passed away Thursday, February 28, at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, June 3, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Dora Abare. She was a graduate of Framingham State College in Massachusetts. Marjorie was a kindergarten teacher for many years, living in Florida and later New Hampshire, and moved to this area in 2000.

She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence C. Smith, whom she married on June 24, 1972. She is survived by her stepchildren James C. Smith of New Hampshire and Shirley A. Haskins of Malta; step grandchildren Nicole (James) Haley and Alex Haskins, Lawrence, Jamie and Jayson Smith; step great grandchildren Skyler Haley and Norma Smith; close friend Linda White and several cousins.

Joseph F. Janczak
Of West High Street, Ballston Spa, passed away Thursday, February 21 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Schenectady, October 5, 1916, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Janczykowski. He proudly served in the Navy during World War II on a destroyer in the Pacific. He was a water tender third class.
Joe worked for the American Locomotive Co in Schenectady for many years. He later was a policeman for the village of Ballston Spa and a building contractor. He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 358 of Ballston Spa and a member of Eagle Matt Lee Fire Dept since 1931. He enjoyed polka dancing.

He was predeceased by his son Joseph F. Janczak III, 4 brothers Henry, Matthew, Bernard and Walter; stepbrother Stanley Oleksiak and 3 sisters Helen Rutkowski, Sophie Wright and Edith Bigelow. Of Goode Street, Ballston Spa, passed away suddenly, Friday, February 22, at his home. Born in Niskayuna, June 19, 1959, he was a graduate of Burnt Hills High School. He worked for the Town of Ballston Spa for 18 years. Danny loved horses, lighthouses and was an avid collector of Budweiser memorabilia and belt buckles. He was a WWE Wrestling Fan and enjoyed traveling around the area to view the Christmas decorations. He was a member of AA and was proud to be drug and alcohol free for 15 years. Danny was always there to lend a helping hand to his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother Barbara Ellis Merchant; brother Charles L. (Robin) Merchant of Berwick, Maine; 2 sisters Sue (Larry) Rafferty of Ballston Spa and Kathy (Raymond J.) She also owned and operated the Ballston Spa Liquor Store. Hilda was an avid bridge player.

She was predeceased by her brother John Aufiero and 3 sisters; Ann Mullen, Nina Connely and Edith Aufiero. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Henry Ryan; 3 children, David (Cathy) Ryan, Peter (Mimi) Ryan, and Nancy (Brian) Biggs; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters Marion O’Brien and Annette Parente; brother Alphonse Aufiero, Jr., and several nieces and nephews.

Of East High Street, Ballston Spa, passed away, Thursday, February 14 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Ford and Pearl Vaughn. Sara and her husband Bob founded the Armer Funeral Home, Inc on their family farm on Goode Road in the early 1960‘s. They moved into town in 1968, to the present location on East High Street. She enjoyed traveling and family picnics on the farm. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brothers Stuart, William, Skeet and Blair Vaughn and sister Zelda Fredsall. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert W. Of Rockrose Way, Malta, passed away Wednesday, February 13, at Mary’s Haven. Born in Troy, May 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John and Caroline Stackrow. She lived in Troy for most of her life and moved to Malta in 2001. She married James B. Mullin on August 11, 1940. Frances worked for the NYS Department of Labor for 20 years, retiring in 1977. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church in Ballston Lake and was an avid sports fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband James B. Mullin on September 16, 2007; 4 sisters Anna Byer, Caroline Rochminski, Helen McKosky and Bertha Bovino and 2 brothers John and Anthony Strackrow. She is survived by her children Dr. James B.
