Joan F. O'Neil

Joan F. O’Neil 62 of Ballston Spa passed away at her home Friday, January 13, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Ticonderoga, August 25, 1949, she was the daughter of the late John and Faye Treadway. Recently retired from a 20 year career in retail, Joan was a dedicated wife and mother whose strength of spirit in the face of terminal illness was astonishing to all who knew her. At the end of her life, despite being weakened by illness, she still managed to spend her precious time with her family -- her husband, children and her grandchildren, of whom she was especially proud. After a seven year battle with cancer, Joan made the courageous decision to terminate chemo treatments and spend her remaining time on her own terms with her family.

Knowing that the true measure of a human life is not material possessions, but rather spiritual wealth, Joan had a great heart full of strength and courage, as well as love for her family and friends. With unshakeable faith in her creator, Joan weathered adversity and illness for many years with a sense of generosity and humor for which all who knew her are extremely grateful.

Joan is survived by her husband of 44 years, Elbridge, or “Al” O’Neil, their three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Susan of Rochester, Mark and Annette of Gansevoort and Jeff and Stacie of Corinth, and five grandchildren Keegan, Nathaniel, Marissa, Aidan and MacKenzie. She was predeceased by her sister Jacqueline Lamotte and is survived by her siblings, sister Janice Hart (and husband Steve) of Mineville and brother, Lemuel Treadway (and wife Sue) of Moriah with several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 3pm Saturday, January 21, at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church, 24 Circular Street, Saratoga Springs with a reception in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
